U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuge Specialist Jerry Tupacz writes notes on a nest’s location and egg data in his logbook as he holds a loggerhead sea turtle hatchling on Lighthouse Island at Cape Romain on Thursday, July 21, 2022. This hatchling was the lone survivor from a nest that was prematurely uncovered by raccoons early that morning, with around 20 other hatchlings found dead in the nest. Raccoons, coyotes, seagulls, and ghost crabs all pose dangers to Lighthouse Island’s eggs and hatchlings before and after they emerge from their nests.
